“Okay, let’s turn on the gennies,” Sarah said.

“On it!” Franky called up from the basement level.

Chris stood in the atrium of the fortress, his hand pressed against the cold concrete wall. The central atrium rose the full height of the structure, ringed by reinforced walkways that provided access to each level. Unlike a traditional building, every element had been designed for survival. The thick walls held no windows, but there were carefully positioned gun ports. Each level could be sealed off with heavy steel barriers, creating a series of fallback positions all the way to the roof.

For the first time since the system arrived, he felt truly safe. For the past five hours, after resting for one of those hours, he had finished completing the interior of the fortress.

Now, they were about to see it in the glow of electricity. Assuming Chris had built everything in here correctly in his exhausted state.

“Testing, one, two, three!” Franky shouted.

The generators chugged to life, and with them came a surge of energy that lit up each of the fortress’s four main levels in sequence. The LED strips Chris had salvaged cast a warm glow across the concrete, softer than he expected.

“Yoooooo, this looks dope, fam,” Franky said.

Alain stood beside him, examining the space with a professional eye.

“The ventilation system is well done,” he said. “And the generator load should handle everything, including a kitchen.”

“A proper kitchen,” Marco said. His typical quiet competence was filled with flair. “Now that we have power, I have a surprise!”

He went upstairs while Franky went back to the basement to check on the water. He returned a few seconds later, panting, and then coughing.

“System’s up and running,” Franky said. “Pressure’s building!”

“You are good for something,” Tony said.

“Same goes for you, bruv.”

“Okay, last step, testing the wards,” Alain said, pulling out a small crystal. He pressed it against the wall and muttered an incantation. Blue light rippled across the concrete like water.

[Defense Ward Test: Active]

[Barrier Strength: 92%]

[Magical Resistance: Enhanced]

“Impressive,” Alain said. “The system’s magic has bonded perfectly with the structure.”

From the kitchen area came the gurgling sound of a coffee maker—one of Marco’s priority salvage items. The smell of actual coffee, not instant, drifted down.

“First cup goes to the builder,” Marco called out.

Excited shouts echoed through the building.

Chris watched the fortress come alive as everyone came out of different rooms, drawn to the scent of coffee from their own important, individual tasks.

“Want the grand tour?” Chris asked.

“Lead the way, boss,” Bunny said. He scrambled up to his usual shoulder perch.

They started with the ground floor, essentially one large room dominated by the vault door and security checkpoint. Chris had incorporated lessons from his construction days, adding a decontamination area and an equipment cleaning station.

“Smart,” Don said, examining the setup. “We can process salvage here before bringing it up.”

The second and third levels were pure defense: ammunition storage, firing positions, and medical supplies strategically placed near each fighting position. Chris’s enhanced vision showed him the flows of power through the walls where Alain’s wards had been integrated into the structure.
